1984 is, without a doubt, the most harrowing book I've ever read

The ending freaked me the fuck out. I’m glad people are reading it, especially right now.

Yup it’s a mind fuck. You can’t rebel against authority if you don’t have a word about it.

Also this used to be mandatory reading in high school.

It’s about time I dusted off my old hand-me-down copy and read it again.

Good that’s a little reassuring.

I read it in 8th and junior year. I got angry at the idea of it happening.

Keep in mind this was halfway into Obama’s second term. I want to read it again, but I don’t know if I can, especially right now when it’s becoming even more relevant.

We definitely seem to be marching into an Orwellian/Ballardian world.

A person is smart, people are stupid.

The Prince and Rules For Radicals also skewed my political cynicism further. Intentional or not on the part of our politicians it’s important to know the game being played.

If that wasn’t a sobering read, check out “This Can’t Happen Here” by Sinclair Lewis.

Spoiler: it can if left to run unchecked.

I never really understood the appeal other than the superficial, “it’s ok and right to keep everything you can grab from anybody else,” mentality. And it is completely opposite most religious values of a significant percentage of Republican voters. Just really odd...

I really tried to read atlas shrugged and I just couldn’t get more than half way through it. I read fiction all the time and Atlas Shrugged felt like a whinny early 20th century essay.

That, and Fahrenheit 451 seem oddly relevant right now.
